Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest certain calls made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
