Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
