The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday advert produced with AI following receiving considerable online backlash.

The brief film was developed using AI-generated video and was first released publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Removal

Following its publication, commenters denounced the employment of AI in the advert. A number of called it "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This experience is an valuable lesson as we examine the appropriate utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a spokesperson from the company.

The commercial was produced for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of situations that might go awry over the festive season, with the slogan "the most terrible time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Adverts that feature AI tools have become a growing phenomenon among large companies, notably for the holiday campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has also released back-to-back AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Technical Challenges: As segments made with generative AI are susceptible to distort the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also sparked concerns about the replacement of human roles in the creative sector, with some commenters stating it might reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Response from the Production Company

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

Bridge claimed, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "countless iterations" which were then edited afterward "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an AI trick," she commented. "The result was a film."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly criticized, the sentiment for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand reportedly achieved a significant "favorable response" from viewers.

However, other businesses have also received criticism for using AI in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The episode highlights the continuing discussion within the marketing and creative industries about the balance between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
